Why Making Your Bed Makes You Happier
Make Your Bed Day observed on September 11th, is a fun reminder that a little routine goes a long way in making you more productive and – overall – happier.
Yes, the act of tucking in the sheets, smoothing over the duvet, and stacking your pillows can seem frivolous when faced with a mountain of more important chores and jobs to surmount that day, but Charles Duhigg, author of The Power of Habit, stresses that making one’s bed is a “keystone habit” that can help to kick-start a pattern of other good behaviour.
He writes: “Making your bed every morning is correlated with better productivity, a greater sense of well-being, and stronger skills at sticking with a budget.”
If this weren’t reason enough to start making your bed every day, best-selling author and happiness researcher, Gretchen Rubin, has also attested to the power of making one’s bed, dubbing it one of the most effective and easiest triggers of happiness.
“When I was researching my book on happiness,” Rubin explains, “this was the number one most impactful change that people brought up over and over.”
Of course, holidays are the epitome of happiness, so be indulgent when on holiday, and let our experienced housekeeping department make your bed for you instead!
