Put Your Best Skin Forward Part 2: Choosing the Right Skin Care Products
Considering how everyone’s skin is unique, it goes without saying that there can be no singular product that will work miracles on every skin type.
Indeed, perhaps you and your friend –both possessing of oily skin –have been sampling products concurrently in a quest for that coveted healthy glow, to find that what is effective for one of you, is ineffective for the other.
No surprises here, unfortunately.
You need to find the right product that works best for you. With a little guidance, and trial and error, this need not be an arduous endeavour.
There are several skin care products that you could (should!) have in your arsenal, including:
Cleanser:
Whatever your skin type, a gentle cleanser to wash or wipe away dirt and oil is a must. Introduce cleansing into your nightly bedtime routine: you won’t regret it!
Toner:
Those with darker skin pigmentation or with oily skin would do well to invest in a toner. Used after cleansing, toner helps to even out the skin tone, and draw out that excess oil from your pores.
Exfoliator:
There’s nothing like a good exfoliation to refresh the skin, as you feel the excess oil and skin cell build-up being scrubbed away. People with dry skin should exfoliate twice a week, whilst those with oily skin should aim to exfoliate once a week. If you have sensitive skin, look to exfoliate once every 10 days.
Acne Spot Treatment:
When your cyclic acne makes an appearance, reach for an acne spot treatment. Worn overnight, acne treatments contain either salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide with proven medicinal effects.
Skin Lighteners:
Age and sun exposure can lead to the development of brown spots and patches of discolouration. Using a skin lightener–which is a type of moisturiser –can help to gradually lighten these problematic areas, preventing excess melanin production in your skin.
Anti-Ageing Cream:
With each passing year, your skin’s elasticity wanes, which can give way to wrinkles. Anti-ageing cream is an intense moisturiser which is a must in reducing wrinkles and fill in in fine lines.
Skin Moisturizer/Sunscreen:
All skin types should use a moisturiser and sunscreen protection cream on top. Use a higher SPF if you’re going to spend extended time in the sun.
Creating a Daily Customised Skin Care Routine
Armed with the right skin care products, look to develop a customised skin care routine that you adhere to religiously.
Most dermatologists agree that washing your face morning and night –and following rigorous workouts –is the first step to healthy skin.
Furthermore, there are certain lifestyle choices you can make that will work wonders in helping to keep your skin clear. For instance, eating fresh fruit and vegetables and avoiding processed foods, staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and stopping smoking are everyday tricks you can employ.
It’s also important to keep in mind that your skin type can change over time. For instance, people typically have the oiliest skin during their teens and early twenties, then your skin tone evens out for most of your adult life, and then turns sensitive and dry in the geriatric years.
Hébe Spa Tip To-Go:
Once you get your customized skin care routine started at home, consider setting up a facial appointment for professional guidance and maintenance (and a little R&R at the spa!).
