Top Skincare Tips for Your 40s and Beyond
As the years pass, our skin requires greater attention.
We may not have much time to devote to skincare the older we get, but it’s a basic fact: without a little tender, loving care, we simply cannot put our best face forward.
And by tender, loving care, we don’t mean obliterate our faces’ natural, unique development.
After all, we strongly believe that fine lines and wrinkles are merely our face’s way of showing a life well spent so far, laughing and smiling.
Nevertheless, where once a simple ‘wash and go’ would suffice in taking care of your skin, entering your 40s requires overhauling your routine to ensure that your skin is always clean, fresh, and soothed.
Below are our top four tips for looking after your skin in your 40s:
1) Cleanse gently
Soaps and foams are notoriously harsh cleansers, stripping away the skin’s natural oils. This may not be a problem early on in life. But as we get older, these natural oils are essential to keeping the skin plump, protecting it from germs, and combatting dryness and irritation. So, when cleansing in your 40s and beyond, opt for gentle cleansers, such as oils and milks.
2) Exfoliate regularly
Exfoliating helps to rid the face of dirt and dead skin cells. Those with sensitive or dry skin have perhaps long learnt to avoid exfoliating altogether, but experts agree that the added (oft overlooked!) benefit of exfoliating – that is, increasing and stimulating circulation – is too powerful a tool in the toolbox of skincare to ignore. As we age, our circulation becomes sluggish, so giving our face a little boost by gently exfoliating once a week is highly recommended.
3) Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
As we age, collagen and elastin production diminish, which means that our skin can more easily look dull and tired. Seek out products with hyaluronic acid in ensuring that your skin’s vital moisture is replenished, and collagen and elastin production boosted.
4) Cover up
No, not concealer in this instance; by ‘cover up’, we mean protect against the sun’s UV rays, which are credited as being highly damaging to collagen levels. As part of your daily skincare routine, ensure you apply sunscreen with at least SPF30 every day before leaving the house, even if it’s cloudy: those UV rays can still get through!
