5 Top Tips to Stay Safe in the Sun
The sun: we worship its rays, embrace its warmth, and long to behold the beauty of sun-kissed days, illuminated by its soft beams.
Yes, everything looks better when it’s sunny. But the dark truth is that neglecting to properly protect one’s self from the potent and powerful sun can have dire consequences.
And so, to mark Sun Screen Day on May 27th, we’ve put together a list – with the help of our therapists from our multi-award-winning Hébe Spa – of easy ways to stay safe whilst sun worshipping at Columbia Beach Resort.
1. Wear protective clothing
After you’ve enjoyed your dip in one of our two outdoor pools, pull on an airy kaftan or a light-coloured linen shirt. Besides physically creating a barrier between your skin and the sun, the light colours will help to reflect the light.
2. Accessorise
Sunglasses and a hat will go a long way in deflecting the sun’s harmful rays. Unbeknownst to many, UV rays from the sun can also cause eye problems, such as cataracts. Opt for a pair of sunglasses that lends 100% protection against UVB and UVA rays.
3. Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen!
It can’t be stressed enough: sunscreen is vital in the quest to protect one’s self whilst out and about in the sun. UV rays don’t need long to damage your skin, with a mere 15 minutes of exposure to the sun capable of causing damage. Be wise and don’t be lured by the temptation of getting a ‘quick’ tan: choose SPF 30 and above, apply 15 minutes before heading out, and repeat often (at least every two hours), especially after having gone for a swim.
4. Take a siesta
There’s a reason that the siesta – leisurely midday nap – is famed amongst Mediterranean countries. When the sun is at its peak, locals head for the shade of their houses, and stay inside until after 16:00. Even if you’re on holiday and don’t fancy forsaking the beauty of being by our pools, or on our Blue Flag-honoured Pissouri Bay, you can still ensure you’re under an umbrella. Better yet, head to Apollo Tavern for lunch, and behold the sea from afar whilst gorging on healthy Mediterranean-inspired cuisine!
5. Drink lots (of water!)
Being out and about in the sun can quickly turn dangerous if you allow yourself to get dehydrated. Sunstroke can make you feel dizzy, faint, very, very sick, or even worse. So make sure you always have a bottle of water with you, and drink up!
