International Day of Happiness: What Makes You Happy?
I will try to create more happiness in the world around me: so proclaims the official pledge marking the United Nations’ International Day of Happiness.
Every year, March 20 has come to embody the profound shift in attitudes underway worldwide, whereby the recognition that progress is no longer exclusively associated with economic wealth has dawned, and the realisation that the wealth inherent in human happiness, health, and wellbeing is worth so much more.
And so it is that all 193 United Nations member states have adopted a resolution calling for happiness to be given greater priority.
A resolution that inspired the Columbia team to ask: what makes us happy? And how can we get more of it?
“I’m from Pissouri, and have lived here my whole life. But I never tire of watching the sun rise in the morning over the bay as I drive to work!” – Joanna, Reservations Team
“Nothing beats an early morning paddle board session. It gets me energised for the day, and makes me appreciate even more the natural beauty of the island.” – Dia, Breakfast Manager
“This may surprise some, but Cyprus is home to a collection of amazing wineries featuring state-of-the-art equipment. The resulting wine is actually really good. I love driving to the foothills of Limassol or Paphos and spending the afternoon wine tasting!” – Josef, Bar Manager
“Being involved in the planning of weddings at Columbia Beach Resort, I really feel that I get to experience every couple’s happiness alongside their journey. There are some couples we’ve hosted who have gotten engaged at the resort, married here, and spent their honeymoon with us. They even return for their anniversaries! It’s amazing to make a connection with a couple and to be able to help them celebrate important occasions, watching their lives grow.” – Koulla Michael, F&B Coordinator
